Scoring with Your Mother-in-Law

How to earn points with your lady and build street cred with your in-laws

Everyone knows the jokes about the in-laws. Many of us have experienced the horror, humiliation and hilarity of meeting and hanging out with our girl's fam. "How in the world did she turn out so well?" you wonder quietly, to yourself.

I count myself as one of the lucky ones. My father-in-law is cool, drinks lots of beer, farts a lot (no coincidence) and always has a good story -- and the mom-in-law is hip, knows how to dress and cooks a mean steak. But if you don't happen to be as lucky as I am, here are a few tips to get you started off on the right foot with your potential new family. The first step is to do something nice for your girl's mom this Mother's Day.

Take some initiative
  • Make it your own idea.
  • Start early, so you have a better chance of it being your own idea.
  • Find something specific to her (like, not a bowling ball … Unless she bowls, in which case, a bowling ball is perfect).
Shop around
  • Have a custom arrangement of flowers made just for her.
  • Get her a gift certificate for a day at the spa.
  • Pick up a hilarious (but tasteful) talking card.
No job? No money? No problem -- Make her something!
  • Cosmo, anyone? You can find a recipe on the Web (and any guy should be able to operate a shaker).
  • Bake some cookies. Sugar cookies are near fool-proof. Heck, boxed brownies still count as homemade!
  • Frame a pic of you and her daughter.

You get the idea. Lots of opportunities. Big points.

These are good ideas. Better, though, is to every day let her know that you are confident and will protect her precious daughter from harm and from pain. Women are hard-wired for needing security....All of them from birth to the grave. You can't buy this with a gift on Mother's day, but you definitely don't want to be empty-handed on MD, also. -- BC
