How Does Chemistry.com Measure Up?
While science has yet to come up with a 100% accurate predictor of how and why we fall in love, the experts at Chemistry.com are sure of but one thing: Two people are more likely to spark a lasting relationship if they're compatible to begin with.
Dreamed up by the masterminds at Match.com and overseen by relationship guru Dr. Helen Fisher, Chemistry.com brings a deductive perspective to online dating, with a system that learns what you're really looking for in a significant other, then sends you matches with whom you have a strong chance of connecting. And with over 4 million active Chemistry members, odds are good that you'll find someone who complements you.
How it Works
The Chemistry personality profile process is more in-depth than what you'll find on most other dating sites, but it still only takes about half an hour to complete. First, you'll answer a bunch of seemingly strange questions, such as how long your index finger is in comparison to your ring finger, who's really smiling in a series of photos and how you'd react in a few hypothetical situations. There are also the standard questions about your likes and dislikes, physical attributes, what you're looking for in a match and details about your deal breakers.
All this comes together to create a profile with a twist. Your personality is broken down into two main types (primary and secondary) based on your answers, and Chemistry scours its databases to send you matches that fit not only your criteria but also your "type."
The Chemical Process
Once you've found someone you'd like to get to know better, Chemistry helps you cut down on potential dating mishaps with guided communication that gradually introduces you at a comfortable pace.
The process is similar to those of other dating sites, but it's quicker (only 3 steps instead of 4 or 5) and doesn't force you to re-evaluate whether or not you still like your match every step of the way. If you're interested, take the next step; if not, simply halt the process and move on.
- Step 1: Are they worth pursuing?
If someone catches your eye and they feel the same way, you begin by rating the importance of "relationship essentials" -- i.e., their job, intellectual curiosity, family priorities, etc. Your match does the same, then Chemistry sends you each other's answers so you can compare them side by side to find out if your values match up. - Step 2: Make the first move
If you both like what you see, you each choose a few short-answer questions to send to the other person. (To make sure you're moving at the same pace, you can only see their answers once you've submitted yours.) - Step 3: Start talking
The last step is opening the budding relationship up to email so you can communicate freely and decide where to meet for your first encounter.
If virtual communication isn't your style, Chemistry also lets you bypass these steps and propose a brief first meeting (using the aptly named First-Meeting™ technology) by answering a few questions about when and where you'd like to get together and what you expect from the date. If your match agrees, the two of you can commune over coffee or a quick lunch to find out if there's a spark.
